Envelope-free RBC ATMs

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed for this blog. Thanks for visiting!

I was somewhat surprised yesterday when attempting to deposit $100 through the nearest RBC ATM. I put my five $20 bills into an envelope and marked the amount on the special envelope and then followed my usual routine. Much to my surprise, the machine rejected the envelope indicating problems with scanning it. I tried this several times before I realized the ATM kept showing me a message where the top line indicated “no envelopes”.
I then took the bills out of the envelope and deposited them in the machine. The ATM scanned them and correctly indicated that it had received five $20 bills. I was most surprised at this turn of events. Thereafter the procedure ran smoothly and the deposit was registered in my account.

Who Has Envelope-free ATMs
When I returned home, I did a Google search for “Envelope-free ATMs”. The first item that came up was information about the New envelope free BMO ATM – BMO Bank of Montreal. On that web page, I found the following explanation:

Below this entry in the Google search was a further explanation from Wells Fargo.
When making a deposit, simply insert up to 30 checks or 50 bills, and the ATM does the rest. The ATM scans your checks, counts your bills, and totals them on screen. You can adjust your amounts, then request printed images of your checks on your receipt.  Envelope-Free ATMs – ATM Banking – Wells Fargo
Does RBC Have Envelope-free ATMs
The surprising thing was that there was no information from RBC. Indeed if you do a search for envelope-free ATMs on the Royal Bank website, the only information seems to be about the traditional ATM that uses envelopes.

So it was not that I had not received the memo. The Royal Bank has not chosen to spread the word about their new ATMs. The only reference I could find anywhere was in a newsletter to RBC Pensioners in 2018.

Words fail me as they do apparently for the Royal Bank.
